In the year 2505, the earth coasts on the last legs of a technological tidal wave, and life has slipped into a dark and eerie age of physical silence and electronic dissonance. English has been adopted as the lingua franca of the world, and as government officials focused on upgrading net-space and streamlining online communication, cities fell into disrepair. Internet tycoons took over the economy almost overnight, creating a huge rift between the wealthy and technologically savvy upper class, and those without the resources to keep up. These days, not having a computer is far more crippling than not having a personal vehicle ever was, and asking someone for their net domain is as common as asking their name.

But things do not always go as well as they look on spreadsheets. Slowly but surely, the technological epicenters of the world began to crumble, and Tokyo was in fact one of the first cities to feel the weight of progress bearing down on its back. As older machines were shoved aside to make way for smaller, faster, better ones, an overstock of dead motherboards and broken hard drives began to build up in the back alleys, creating pockets of corrupted electromagnetic fields that fried light circuits, frazzled existing equipment, and damaged the new and incoming machinery. By the time the situation was realized, however, Tokyo's most advanced sectors had already grown supersaturated with degenerate magnetic fields, leaving the districts of Shinjuku, Akihabara, and the artificial island of Odaiba technological dead-zones. There, machinery was unreliable at best and barely-functional at worst, driving businesses to other locations and leaving the districts to fall into disconsolate slums.

As times changed and populations shifted, the long-established Japanese mafia accrued more and more power, corrupting the local law enforcement and forcing even the imperial line and remaining high-class noble families to cooperate with the Yakuza syndicate. Disgusted by the corrupt politicians and degenerate police forces, an underground rebellion has sprung into being, looking to fight back the Yakuza on their own terms, but the Yakuza is not the only threat in today's day and age. The eerie goings on in the run-down corners of the city are enough to send chills down the spine. The violent crime in the Shinjuku slums is at an all-time high, the suicide rate in Akihabara is appalling, and there's always the fact that anyone who goes to Odaiba just...never seems to come back. There's a wicked force at work in the dark sidestreets of Tokyo's fallen sectors--no shadow is safe, no flashlight is enough; no name has been given, no face made known, and no hope seems forthcoming for those who would unravel these strange occurrences that only go on at night.

Welcome to our city. Please enjoy your stay. Stay out of the Yakuza's way and below the police's radar, and you could get along just fine; smuggle technological contraband, rule the masses, run a racket, or fight the power--just don't get caught in the dark.
